Som Tam

A spicy, tangy green papaya salad pounded with chili, lime, and fish sauce.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups shredded green papaya
  • 2 tomatoes, sliced
  • 2 tbsp dried shrimp
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 2 Thai chilies
  • 2 tbsp fish sauce
  • 2 tbsp lime juice
  • 1 tbsp palm sugar

Steps

  1. Pound garlic and chilies in a mortar until coarsely crushed.
  2. Add tomatoes and dried shrimp, lightly bruising them.
  3. Add shredded papaya and pound gently while mixing.
  4. Season with fish sauce, lime juice, and palm sugar, tossing well.
  5. Serve immediately with sticky rice or fresh vegetables.
